Make an Athame

How to make your own Athame

Feral says:
"An Athame is not a toy. Use wisely. These instructions are for information only. What you do with them is your responsibility. Also, carrying a knife in a public place is an offence unless proven item is for an appropriate use."

First, go to Interknife and buy a blade, guard and pommel. (Thank you Rod for your help!!)

Second buy or find a nice bit of wood. Choice of wood depends on personal preference and / or significance of wood type. I chose Ash.

Shape wood into a rough cylinder shape using a plane and drill a centre hole.

Cut thread on tang and pommel using a tap and a die .

Fit guard onto tang (tang may need filling) and then thread on a circular piece of leather to act as a washer. Then push on wood. Then another leather washer and finally screw on the pommel.

Using a rasp, shape the ends of the wood to the same diameter as the guard and pommel. Use different grade of sand paper until a smooth final finish is achieved.

I then used beeswax to bring out the colour of the wood and protect it from my sweaty mitts.

And after much rasping and sanding, you get this
